Fresh job opportunities for Bangladeshis through the lone state-owned agency are opening up in a potential destination as six select professionals are readying to fly first to Fiji, officials say.

Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) is going to send this batch of workers to the South Pacific Ocean island republic, raising hope for more jobs over there gradually, they say.

Officials of the state-run recruiting agency say professionals and skilled and semi-skilled workers stand chances of going to that country with jobs for "attractive wages".

"Fiji would be a long-term prospective market for Bangladeshi workers as the employers are willing to hire workers from here," one BOESL official told the FE.

The agency has received demand for workers recently and selected six professionals who are expected to go to the job destination within two or three months, he said.

Of the total six, five are air-conditioning technicians and one financial controller. The migration cost will be Tk 87000 each, and monthly salary varies from Tk 0.2 to 0.6 million.

Another process of sending 10 workers also is underway. They will go as semi-skilled workers mainly in construction sector. The workers will be interviewed by the employers this week.

Monthly wages of the workers will be Tk 50000 each and they need to spend Tk 52000 as recruitment cost.

Job contract will be for two years and it is renewable for all categories.

Fiji, an archipelago of more than 300 islands, needs foreign workers in different sectors, like construction, hospitality and agriculture.

"To avoid overcharge and unfair practices, Fijian employers prefer to hire workers through the government agency," official adds.

"Once it starts sending workers to that country successfully, we would receive more demands," hopes Dr Mallick Anwar Hossain, managing director of BOESL.

More than 2,000 Bangladeshis are working in Fiji in various sectors, officials said.
