A gold trader was shot and robbed of 200 bhoris of gold and Tk 0.1million (Tk 1 lakh) in the capital's Banasree area on Sunday night.
The victim was identified as Anwar Hossain, 55.
He sustained bullet injuries in the attack and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he is now undergoing treatment. According to locals, a band of armed robbers on three motorcycles waylaid Anwar around 10:30 pm on Road No. 7 in Block D of Banasree.
They attempted to snatch the gold jewellery in his hand; but as he continued efforts to save those, one of the attackers shot him.
At one point, the robbers managed to take the gold and cash Tk0.1 million from him and fled the scene.
Officer-in-Charge of Rampura Police Station Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand said the incident occurred when Anwar, who owns a jewellery shop in Banasree, was returning home after closing his business.
He added one of the attackers, wearing a red helmet, shot Anwar three times- hitting him in both legs and his back.
Anwar was carrying 200 bhoris of gold and Tk 0.1 million at the time of the attack. After the shooting, the robbers took his belongings and quickly fled on their motorcycles.
A 31-second video of the incident, which went viral on social media, shows seven individuals on three motorcycles, all wearing helmets.
The video captures a fight between Anwar and the attackers, during which an individual wearing red helmet shot the victim. Following the shooting, the group quickly departed on their motorcycles.
Meanwhile, wife of the gold trader, Hosneara, filed a case in connection with the incident. She filed the case with Rampura Police Station on Monday making six to seven unidentified persons accused. An official at the police station said police started working to identify the culprits by reviewing the video clippings and CCTV footages.
Earlier on the day, Hosneara alleged that despite her requests to open the gate of the house, where they live as tenants, its owner and the gateman did not respond.
She made the allegation to the media in front of the house where the attack took place.
She said her husband was calling to open the gate at the time of the attack on him by the robbers. She alleged that hearing her husband screaming she went to the floor of the house owner and also asked the gateman to open the door but in vain.
She said due to the delay in opening the gate, pedestrians took her husband to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds inflicted by the attackers.
