The President has dismissed Justice Khizir Hayat, a judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, on charges of serious misconduct.
The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs issued a notification in this regard on March 19, confirming that the President officially removed Justice Hayat on March 18.
The decision was made in accordance with Article 96(6) of the Constitution following the Supreme Judicial Council's recommendation.
Justice Hayat was among 12 High Court judges who were temporarily suspended from judicial duties on October 20, 2024, following student protests demanding the resignation of "partisan, corrupt, and fascist-aligned judges".
He was one of the justices of the High Court bench that pronounced the verdict restoring the 30 per cent quota for children of freedom fighters in government jobs on June 5 last year. Following the verdict, university students across the country began to protest against the quota system.
Justice Hayat was the president of Dhaka University unit's Chhatra League. Born on January 24, 1967, he completed his education at Dhaka University. He started his legal career on August 6, 1997 at the Dhaka District Judge Court and was later enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court Division on February 9, 2001.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court on May 31, 2018 and was made permanent two years later.
