Scorching heat along with day-long traffic congestion brought terrible sufferings to the city dwellers on Sunday.

High humidity and partially cloudy sky raised the heat in the city on the sixth day of the fasting month of Ramadan, hitting hard working people who had to spend hours in vehicles to reach their workstations.

However, Met Office forecasted rain in few places across the country including Dhaka division, from today (Monday).

The country's highest temperature was 37.6 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi on Sunday. Dhaka's maximum temperature was recorded 35.8 degrees Celsius.

A mild heat-wave swept over Khulna division and parts of Dhaka, Chattogram and Rajshahi divisions on the day.

"Its intensity may reduce in some places of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions from Monday morning due to possibility of rain in a few areas," meteorologist Md Sadekul Alam said.

Meanwhile, severe gridlock on most of the city roads intensified the sufferings of working people on the day.

Vehicular movement came to almost standstill at several points in the city. The tailback increased further in the noon after office hours.

The jam become intolerable in some areas across the city, including Gulistan, Gabtoli, Mohammadpur, Motijheel, Mirpur-12, Mirpur-10, Rokeya Sarani, Gulshan, Banani, Badda, Mogbazar, Eskaton, Tejgaon, Airport Road, Uttara and Old Dhaka.

Shafiqul Islam Murad, a private bank official, told the FE that it took him two and a half hours to reach his office at Motijheel from Mohammadpur on the day.

He said vehicles on the road from Katabon to Purana Paltan were almost stagnant for hours in the morning.

The situation turned worst when people started returning to their home in the noon.

Md Ibrahim Ali, an employee of a private firm at Gulistan, got off from a bus near Matsya Bhaban after waiting in gridlock for long.

"Passengers in the Shyamoli-bound bus faced untold sufferings in the traffic jam for hot and humid weather, as the vehicle had no fan," he added.

However, traffic movement became normal after the Iftar on the day.
