Hundreds attempt to raze Dhanmondi 32 building

FE REPORT | February 06, 2025 00:00:00

Aggrieved students and other people vandalise the Dhanmondi-32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the city on Wednesday night, as ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was forced to flee to India during the mass uprising, was scheduled to deliver a speech on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Chhatra League at night.

Hundreds of agitated protesters stormed the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital around 8:00 pm on Wednesday, attempting to demolish the building.

The attack followed calls for a "Bulldozer Procession" on social media, which emerged in response to the announcement of a live media address by ousted premier Sheikh Hasina from Delhi.

Hasina fled to India on August 05 following a student-mass uprising.

The International Crimes Tribunal has since launched an investigation against Hasina, who is labelled as one of the most brutal dictators in the country's history, on charges of orchestrating mass killings, enforced disappearances and siphoning off vast sums of money.

As of 8:30 pm, hundreds of protesters were still attempting to bulldoze Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence, which was turned into a museum after his assassination in 1975.

The building was already set on fire by protesters on August 05.
