ICT Chief Prosecutor seeks Interpol Red Notice to arrest Hasina

FE REPORT | November 13, 2024 00:00:00

Sheikh Hasina

The chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka has requested Interpol to issue a Red Notice for arresting former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August mass uprising.

The office of the ICT chief prosecutor sent a letter to Interpol through the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to this effect on Sunday.

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam informed reporters of the update during a briefing on the ICT premises in the capital on Tuesday.

Tajul Islam said, "We requested Interpol two days ago (Sunday) to issue a Red Notice. Since the former prime minister (Sheikh Hasina) is an accused in the case and as she is now out of Bangladesh's jurisdiction, we made the request so that the Interpol takes steps to arrest her or issue a Red Notice against her."

According to Interpol's website, a Red Notice is a request to law-enforcement agency worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. A Red Notice is not the same as an international arrest warrant.

Meanwhile, the ICT also issued warrants for the arrest of four police officials including Jakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Jatrabari Police Station, in connection with the July-August mass killings, he added.

Mr Islam said Jakir Hossain and three other officers were accused of committing atrocities in Jatrabari.

"The investigation agency has gathered evidence linking these officers to the incidents," he said.

Tajul Islam further said the prosecution requested the court to interrogate Major General Ziaul Ahsan, who had been discharged from the army, for a day and was granted consent.

Ziaul Ahsan is former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC), and now under arrest. Due to security concerns, the date of the interrogation was naot disclosed, he added.
