An ICT prosecution indicted a former DMP commissioner and other policemen in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed during last year's July-August uprising, which is the first time pressing of charges in a case linked to the revolution.
Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and seven other policemen have been charged at the ICT in the case filed over the murder of six people in the city's Chankharpul on August 5, last year.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam submitted the chargesheet at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
Upon holding a hearing, the three-member bench of the ICT headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder took the charges brought against the eight people into its cognizance.
It also set June 3 this year for starting hearing on the charge sheet.
According to the allegations, Habibur Rahman and several others accused were involved under command responsibility, while other police personnel directly participated in the killings of six protesters.
The other accused are Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, the then DMP joint commissioner; Sha Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former additional deputy commissioner; Mohammad Imrul, former assistant commissioner of Ramna Zone of DMP; Arshad Hossain, former police inspector (operation) at Shahbagh Police Station; and constables Sujon, Imaz Hossain and Nasirul Islam.
Arshad, Sujon, Imaz, and Nasirul are in jail, while the others are on the run.
The tribunal has issued arrest warrant against the absconding four, including the former DMP commissioner Habibur.
Earlier, on April 20, the investigation agency of the ICT submitted the probe report against the eight policemen accused in the case.
Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Miah are the martyrs of the incident.
