Jatiya Party office set on fire

FE REPORT | November 01, 2024 00:00:00

Sporadic clashes, chase and counter-chase took place between an 'Anti-Fascism Students-Workers-People' combine and Jatiya Party men late on Thursday evening at Kakrail in the city.

Jatiya Party's central office at Kakrail was also set on fire during the clashes.

Sources said a torch procession was held in the Raju Sculpture area at Dhaka University under the banner of 'Anti-Fascism Students-Workers-People'. At the end of the rally, the crowd headed for besieging the office of the Jatiya Party at Kakrail terming the party as an 'accomplice of Awami League'.

However, when the rally of the Anti-Fascism Students-Workers-People' came near the Jatiya Party office, the party men attacked the rally with native weapons. Then clashes, chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and several members of students-people were injured.

Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the 'Anti-Discrimination Students Movement', at 7.30 pm on his verified facebook page said, "National traitor Jatiya Party men are beating our brothers in Vijaynagar (near Kakrail area) with weapons and they are holding showdown with weapons. This time, the overthrow of these traitors is certain."

Another coordinator Md Sarjis Alam at 8.30 pm on his facebook page said, "Jatiya Party men attacked our brothers in Vijaynagar with weapons and they are holding showdown with weapons. We will move to Vijaynagar from Raju Sculpture at 8.30 pm. National traitors have to be overthrown."

It is to be noted that Jatiya Party announced a programme of protest rally on November 2 demanding withdrawal of cases filed against the leaders and activists of the party including its Chairman and Secretary General and to control the prices of essential commodities. Clashes and setting ablaze in the office of the Jatiya Party took place amid the announcement of the programme.

Mujibul Haque Chunnu told media that they have sought permission from the police to hold a rally at the central office premises on November 2, and for that reasons party activists were present at the office on Thursday. But a group of people with a procession attacked the office, he added.

He further said, "The attackers ran away on the resistance of the party activists. But after half an hour they came back together and set fire to the office." He claimed that the fire service came to put out the fire, but they were not allowed to put out the fire.
