Abdur Rashid Jitu was elected Vice President (VP), while Mazharul Islam secured the position of General Secretary (GS), as the results of the long-awaited Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election were finally announced on Saturday evening, nearly 45 hours after polling ended.

The Election Commission declared the final results at 7:00pm at the Senate Bhaban of the university.

According to official figures, Jitu received 3,334 votes in the VP race, defeating his nearest rivals, Arifullah Adib and Arifuzzaman Uzzal, who secured 2,392 and 1,211 votes respectively.

For the GS post, Mazharul bagged 3,930 votes, outpacing his closest contender Abu Touhid Siam, who received 1,238 votes.

Jitu contested as an independent candidate, while Mazhar represented the Samannito Shikkharthi Jote backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Other elected central members include Ferdous Al Hasan as Assistant General Secretary (AGS) and Ayesha Siddika Meghla as AGS (Female); Abu Ubaida Usama as Education and Research Secretary; Safayet Mir as Environment and Nature Conservation Secretary; Jahidul Islam Bappi as Literature and Publications Secretary; Sheikh Jisan Ahmed as Cultural Secretary, assisted by Raihan Uddin as Assistant Cultural Secretary; Ruhul Islam as Drama Secretary; Mahmudul Hasan Kiran as Sports Secretary, assisted by Mahadi Hasan (Male) and Farhana Lubna (Female) as Assistant Sports Secretaries; Rashedul Imon Likhan as IT and Library Secretary; Ahsan Labib as Social and Human Development Secretary, assisted by Touhid Islam (Male) and Nigar Sultana (Female); Husni Mubarak as Health and Food Security Secretary; and Tanvir Rahman as Transport and Communication Secretary.

The Executive Members elected are Fabliha Jahan, Nabila Binte Harun, and Nusrat Jahan Ema (Female), alongside Tarikul Islam, Abu Talha, and Mohammad Ali Chishty (Male).

According to the commission, candidates from the Samonnito Shikkharthi Jote secured 20 out of 25 central posts, including three of the top four positions.

Voting took place on Thursday (September 11) from 9:00am to 5:00pm across 21 residential halls. Ballot boxes were later transferred to the Senate Building, where manual counting began around 10:00pm, significantly delaying the announcement of results.

This year, 620 candidates contested 340 posts across JUCSU and the hall unions. Among them, 131 candidates were elected uncontested in 315 hall posts, while 68 positions remain vacant. For the central body, 177 candidates (132 male and 45 female) vied for 25 positions.

A total of 11,743 students were registered as voters, including 6,015 males and 5,728 females. Of them, 8,003 cast ballots, marking a turnout of approximately 68 per cent.
