The head of the post-uprising interim government made the remarks while thanking the nation after voting in the polls was over on Thursday afternoon, with no reports of major untoward incidents despite various concerns in the run-up to the vote.
In a statement issued after the voting concluded, he congratulated voters on their "spontaneous participation" and expressed gratitude to political parties, candidates and state institutions involved in conducting the polls.
"The voters' enthusiastic participation, the responsible conduct of political parties, the restraint shown by candidates and the professionalism of all institutions connected to the election have demonstrated that our commitment to democracy remains unshaken," Yunus said.
"By exercising their constitutional rights, the people have played an active role in determining the future of the country."
Yunus extended special thanks to the Election Commission, law- enforcement agencies, the armed forces, civil administration, election observers and members of the media. "Their dedication and hard work ensured that this vast democratic exercise was completed successfully," he said.
The chief of the outgoing government also urged political parties and candidates to uphold democratic norms once final results are declared.
"I call upon all political parties and candidates to maintain democratic civility, tolerance and mutual respect even after the final results are announced. Differences of opinion will remain, but we must stay united in national interest," he said in his appeal.
Describing the election as a moment of "great joy and celebration" for the country, Yunus said it marked the beginning of "an unprecedented journey for a new Bangladesh".
He claimed the polls were among the most peaceful and festive in the country's history, adding that sustaining such a standard would allow Bangladesh's democracy to reach "the highest level of excellence".
"Today, Bangladesh has once again proven that the people are the ultimate source of power. Let us move forward together to build an accountable, inclusive and justice-based state,"
He concludes with an appeal for unity: "Let us work together to strengthen this democratic journey."
