Justice MM Ruhul Amin, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed chief justice, superseding his senior M Fazlul Karim.

President Iajuddin Ahmed gave the appointment Sunday, President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader told journalists at Bangabhaban in the city, reports UNB.

The appointment will be effective on June 1, following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice M Ruhul Amin.

Born on December 23, 1942 in Laxmipur district, MM Ruhul Amin was elevated to the High Court Bench from subordinate court on February 10, 1994. He was appointed in the Appellate Division on July 13, 2003.

Justice Amin started his career as a judicial cadre-service (now defunct) officer.

He is the first judicial cadre-service officer elevated to the highest post of the judiciary.

Reacting to the appointment, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Shafique Ahmed told the news agency that they are "always against the superseding of judges, particularly when this government is a neutral caretaker government".
