Three-time prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is going through a "critical moment" under treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Dhaka's Evercare Hospital, physicians said Sunday.
She is undergoing treatment in ICU as her health condition remains critical and complex, said her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
Speaking to reporters at the main gate of Evercare Hospital, Dr Zahid said Khaleda Zia's condition showed no sign of improvement and that she was passing through a particularly critical phase.
"Begum Khaleda Zia is currently receiving treatment in the ICU. She is going through a critical moment," says the doctor, also a standing- committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who has been beside the party chief all through her treatment process.
According to Dr Zahid, Zia's health began to deteriorate after she was admitted to the hospital on November 23.
She was initially placed in a private cabin, later shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), and subsequently transferred to the ICU as further complications developed.
He said Acting Chairman of the BNP Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, visited the hospital earlier in the day and spent time with Khaleda Zia. Dr Zubaida Rahman, a member of the Medical Board, also participated in a meeting of the expert medical team, which includes physicians from the United Kingdom, the United States and Bangladesh.
The Medical Board has unanimously decided to continue Khaleda Zia's treatment under the supervision of Evercare Hospital.
The expert team is monitoring her condition round the clock, with treatment being administered in line with their collective recommendations, said Dr Zahid.
On behalf of Tarique Rahman and his family, Dr Zahid sought prayers from the nation for Khaleda Zia's recovery.
He also expressed gratitude to the hospital's doctors, nurses and paramedics for what he described as their dedicated efforts.
Addressing party leaders, activists and supporters, he urges restraint to ensure that the treatment process is not disrupted.
He says unnecessary gatherings or activities should not inconvenience other patients or interfere with Khaleda Zia's medical care.
"The medical team is making its best efforts," says Dr Zahid, adding: "If, by the grace of Almighty Allah and the dedication of the doctors, she overcomes this crisis, we'll receive good news."
Begum Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 after suffering breathing difficulties stemming from a lung infection.
