Kuril-Purbachal 100 feet canal project may get cost, time extension

Three roads under DAP to be brought under it

FE Report | February 05, 2018 00:00:00

The 100-foot canal project along both sides of the Kuril-Purbachal link road is likely to be revised, raising its cost and implementation period due to the inclusion of three new roads from the Detailed Area Plan (DAP).

"A revised development project proforma (RDPP) is underway," Brig Gen Iftekhar Anis, director general of 24 engineering construction brigade, told a press conference on the progress of the project at the Army Camp at sector 14 of Purbachal on Sunday.

He explained that both cost and time will have to be raised as three roads proposed in the DAP are being brought about and developed under the canal project.

Bangladesh Army is implementing the project.

Land acquisition will be required for the roads, Brig Anis added.

Talking to the FE, project director Eng Nurul Islam said the design of the project has already been finalised.

Rajuk Chairman Abdur Rahman said the implementation of the roads under the DAP would be possible if those are included in the canal project.

Earlier at a progress review meeting on January 07 last, major changes, in the design of the 'Excavation and Development of 100-foot Canals on Both Sides of Kuril-Purbachal (From Kuril to Balu) Link Road Project' were proposed.

The Tk 52.87 billion project was initiated in September 2015 with a target to complete it by August 2018. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project in December 2016.

The meeting was told that although the 'financial progress' of the project was 85 per cent, the physical progress still remained unknown as the authorities concerned were maintaining silence in this regard.

At the press conference, additional district commissioner (Revenue) Sharif Raihan Kabir said that only Tk 1.85 billion has so far been disbursed among 550 project-affected families out of the total 1,200.

A total of Tk 43.84 billion has been released for land acquisition.

As many as 600 families have filed court cases and 50 families are yet to apply for compensation.
