CHITTAGONG, Oct 16: Islami Chhatra Shibir has achieved a landslide victory in the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) and hall union elections.
Sampritir Chhatra Jote, backed by Shibir, won 24 out of the total 26 positions in the polls.
Around 65 per cent of the total 27,516 voters cast their ballots on Wednesday's polls, according to Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Monir Uddin.
Ibrahim Hossain Rony was elected as vice president (VP) of CUCSU, receiving 7,983 votes. Sajjad Hossain Hridoy of Chhatra Dal, who got the most votes after Rony, secured 4,374 votes.
Rony is a student of the Department of History from the 2017-18 academic year and the president of the Chattogram Metropolitan South unit of Shibir, as well as a member of its central executive council.
The general secretary post was won by Sayeed Bin Habib, another student of the Department of History from the 2019-20 academic year. Habib, the literature and human rights secretary of the university's Shibir branch, received 8,031 votes. Chhatra Dal's Md Shafayat Hossain, got 2,724 votes.
Ayubur Rahman Toufiq was the only candidate from Chhatra Dal who won, getting the assistant general secretary (AGS) post.
Tamanna Mahfuz Smriti of "Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya" won the post of Assistant Sports Secretary.
The other elected leaders of CUCSU are Sports Secretary Mohammad Shawon; Literature, Culture, and Publications Secretary Harez Matbar; Assistant Literature, Culture, and Publications Secretary Jihad Hossain; Office Secretary Abdullah Al Noman; Assistant Office Secretary Jannatul Adan Nusrat; Student Welfare Secretary Nahima Akter Dwipa; Deputy Student Welfare Secretary Jannatul Ferdous Rita; Science and Information Technology Secretary Md. Mahbubur Rahman; Research and Innovation Secretary Tanvir Anjum Shovon; Social Service and Environment Secretary Tahsina Rahman; Health Secretary Afnan Hossain Imran; Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary Md. Monayem Sharif; Career Development and International Secretary Mehedi Hasan Sohan; Communication and Housing Secretary Md. Ishaq Bhuiyan; Assistant Communication and Housing Secretary Obaidul Salman; Law and Human Rights Secretary Fazle Rabbi Touhid; Library and Cafeteria Secretary Masum Billah.
Elected Executive Members are Jannatul Ferdous Sanjida Adnan Sharif, Akash Das, Salman Farsi, and Md. Sohanur Rahman.
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Monir Uddin of the Department of Chemistry announced the results in a crowded auditorium at the CU Faculty of Commerce around 4:45 am on Thursday, about 12 hours after voting ended.
Shibir leaders and activists celebrated their victory with loud slogans.
Since the founding of CU in 1966, CUCSU elections have been held only six times despite being intended as an annual exercise.
The 1st election of CUCSU was held in 1970, the 2nd one in 1972, the 3rd in 1974, the 4th during 1979, the 5th election in 1981, and the 6th was held on February 8, 1990. Wednesday's election was the seventh one.
