Speculations over adoption of the national charter apparently evaporated after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus joined consensus commission's meeting Wednesday and asserted the signing of the document Friday.

The head of interim government also believes all the parties will sign on the charter and participate in the historic signing event at the South Plaza of the National Parliament in the capital, Dhaka.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus also reaffirmed that the 13th parliament election will be held in February, come what may. "Election must be held in February. I have made it clear at home and abroad," he said while addressing an emergency meeting of the National Consensus Commission with political parties to review the implementation process of the July Charter.

"The election will be held in February - in a festive atmosphere," the Chief Adviser told his political audience. "We will do everything within our capacity to make that happen. There will be no compromise on this."

Addressing the political parties, he added, "You have all worked together to draft the National Charter. It is now the government's responsibility to ensure a celebratory and participatory election."

He notes that the Commission members and the political leaders made history by finalising the Charter and thus process of reaching consensus would remain a "milestone event in the political history of the world".

Dr Yunus notes that the July Charter and elections are linked with each other and holding free and fair polls is the integral part of the Charter.
