No respite from bone-chilling cold until tomorrow

Warns Met office

FE REPORT | January 07, 2023 00:00:00

Dhaka recorded 12.0-degree Celsius temperature on Friday, the lowest so far in the capital in this winter, according to the Met office officials.

On Thursday, the capital recorded the temperature at 12.5 degrees Celsius.

In 24 hours until 6:00 am on Friday, the lowest temperature was reported in Dhaka at 12.00 degrees Celsius.

It was nearly three degrees above the country's lowest temperature of 9.0 degrees Celsius recorded in Chuadanga, according to a Met office regular bulletin.

Meteorologists also warned that the existing cold-wave might sweep over parts of Bangladesh until Sunday morning.

Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), told the FE that majority of the people in the capital and elsewhere in the country were experiencing bone-chilling cold, as there was little difference between night and day temperatures.

Mr Mallik said Dhaka recorded 12.0-degree Celsius temperature on Friday, the lowest so far in this season.

The highest temperature in the capital was 20.2 degrees Celsius on the day. The country's highest daily temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at Sitakunda, the bulletin said.

As the fog of longer duration and higher density still persists, it continues to create disruption in road and river traffic across the country.

In its regular 24-hour bulletin - starting from Friday morning, the met office said a mild cold-wave was sweeping over the districts of Naogaon, Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Jashore and Chuadanga, which might continue.

Due to reduced difference between the day and night temperatures, feelings of moderate to severe cold-wave-like condition are likely over north, north-western and central parts of the country, it forecasted.

Moderate to thick fog might be seen over the country from midnight to morning and it might continue till noon at places, according to the BMD bulletin.

The night temperature might remain nearly unchanged and the day temperature might rise slightly.

Ridge of sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining western part of Bangladesh, and seasonal low lies over the South Bay.

Weather might remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, as per the bulletin.

In its outlook for the next 72 hours, starting from Thursday morning, the BMD predicted little change.

Meanwhile BSS report from Rangpur adds: The bone-chilling cold coupled with clouds and fog continued sweeping over the northern region forcing people to stay indoors and hampering vehicular traffic on the roads and highways till 9 am Friday.

The unbearable bite of cold exposed the poor, elderly people and minor children to extreme miseries prompting local authorities to further intensify distribution of warm clothes among cold-stricken people.

Met Office sources said minimum temperatures remained mostly unchanged with a little fluctuation during the past 24 hours reducing the gap between the minimum and maximum temperatures to around 10 degrees Celsius causing the chilling cold.

The minimum temperatures recorded Friday were 11 degrees Celsius at Rangpur, 10 degrees at Dinajpur, 10.5 degrees at Saidpur, 9.6 degrees at Tentulia, 10.6 degrees at Dimla and 11 degrees Celsius at Rajarhat points in the sub-Himalayan region.

The average maximum temperatures ranged between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius on the day in the region.

The sun remained covered behind thick layers of clouds, fog and mists giving most parts of the extreme northern region a darker look till 9 am Friday amid blowing cooler winds from the northwestern directions.

However, the situation marked little improvement after the sun appeared around 10 am for a couple of hours, though the weather started to deteriorate again in the afternoon.
