Police dispersed on Friday activists of Hizb -ut Tahrir as the banned outfit brought out a procession from in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital after jumma prayers.
The procession called 'March for Khilafah' was brought out from the northern gate of the mosque.
Sources said at around 2:15 pm, stalwarts of Hizb-ut Tahrir attempted to confront police personnel when the procession reached near Bijoynagar water tank after passing through Purana Paltan intersection.
In retaliation, policemen fired teargas shells and dispersed Hizb-ut Tahrir members from Bijoynagar neighbourhood.
The law enforces also detained some members of the banned organisation from the area following a chase and counter-chase with them.
Meanwhile, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in the capital's Uttara area.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the DMP, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrest.
He said that the arrest was made during an operation that took place around 12:15 am in sectors no. 11 and 12 under Uttara West Police Station.
The arrestees are identified as Monirul Islam (40), Mohtasin Billah (40), and Mahmoodul Hasan (21).
Mr Muhammad Talebur Rahman said based on secret information, a CTTC team learnt that active members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Uttara West Police Station area were planning to hold a secret gathering for the 'March for Khilafah' event near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the capital on Friday (March 7, 2025). He said that in order to prevent this activity, the CTTC operation team conducted a raid in the area and arrested the suspects.
He added a case was filed against the arrestees under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station.
He also said during initial questioning, the arrestees confessed to being active members of the banned outfit.
Preliminary evidence collected from them also supports this claim, he added.
The CTTC team is continuing efforts to take legal action against their other accomplices.
Meanwhile, the Police Headquarters said on Friday that Hizb ut-Tahrir is a banned organization and any activities related to it (Hizb ut- Tahrir) will be considered a punishable offense under the law.
