Election Commission chief KM Nurul Huda has expressed his support for police, rejecting all allegations by the BNP about the arrest and harassment of its leaders and activists, reports bdnews24.com.

The chief election commissioner made the remarks at a media briefing on the BNP's continuous objections at his office in Dhaka on Saturday.

"The police are under the control of the commission. They are performing their duties according to our instructions. They are not detaining people without any cause," the commissioner said.

The BNP, along with the leaders of Jatiya Oikya Front, have complained that a level playing field is not in place for the upcoming election as the police have kept arresting and harassing opposition leaders.

"There is a level playing field for the election and we are proceeding according to the rules," CEC Huda said.

Though the next parliamentary elections are to be held under an Awami League government, CEC Huda claims the local organising is firmly under the control of the Election Commission.

"The local administration and police are under our control. We have organised a special meeting with law enforcement agencies to provide them with instructions. They have pledged themselves to us and continue to work under our direction. The government has no control over them," Huda said.

He spoke to the media after holding a meeting with executive magistrates who were appointed for the Dec 30 election. Different kinds of responsibilities were assigned to the magistrates.

The CEC launched a day long briefing programme to inform the magistrates about proper election conduct on Saturday. Magistrates from 18 districts came to Dhaka to attend the programme. Another programme related to the same issue will be held on Nov 25 and Nov 26.
