A female garment worker was killed and another injured in a hit-and-run at Chairmanbari in the capital on Monday morning.
Enraged RMG workers blocked Banani road in protest following the accident.
However, they moved away from the area after hours of blockade from Kamal Ataturk Avenue to Amtali at Mohakhali that created severe congestion in Banani and its adjacent areas.
According to police, the accident occurred when a speeding truck hit two apparel workers who were crossing the main road around 7:00 am.
The deceased was identified as Mina Akter who died on the spot. The other was severely injured and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital.
As the news ran apace, aggrieved workers from different factories took to the streets and blocked the road and the nearby expressway, halting traffic.
They also blocked the ramp leading to the Dhaka Elevated Expressway, preventing vehicles from exiting and thus resulting in severe traffic congestion throughout the expressway.
Officer-in-charge Md Rasel Sarwar of Banani police station said, "A road accident occurred, killing one garment worker and injuring another..."
Later, Tejgaon police station seized the killer pickup from Mohakhali bus stand area after analysing video footage and identifying it, he added.
The driver managed to flee, but efforts are underway to detain him.
Vehicular movement returned to normal as the blockaders left the road after seven hours. The impact of the gridlock spread across the city.
According to Mr Sarwar, tailbacks created immense sufferings for commuters.
