Indian Prime Minister Narendra Mod reaffirmed Delhi's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh during his telephone conversation with the head of Bangladesh's present interim government.
"Prime Minister receives telephone call from the Chief Adviser, Interim Government of Bangladesh," said a statement issued from Delhi after Mr Modi's phone talks Friday with Prof Muhammad Yunus.
The Indian prime minister also tweeted on this meeting with the head of interim government installed through a student-people uprising that deposed the Sheikh Hasina government.
During the conversation, the statement said, Mr Modi emphasised India's commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives.
The Indian Prime Minister also underlined the importance of ensuring safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh in the changed situation.
Chief Adviser Prof Yunus, in turn, assured that the Interim government would prioritise "protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minority groups in Bangladesh", the statement said.
The two leaders also discussed ways of taking the bilateral relationship forward in line with the respective national priorities.
Meanwhile, reports say, the deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has been in refuge in India since her exit on August 5.
However, the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser said, the Chief Adviser thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the call and the tweet he posted immediately after he was sworn in as the Head of the Government of Bangladesh.
"He felicitated the Indian leader and the Indian people on the occasion of India's Independence Day, which was celebrated on Thursday, August 15".
"The Indian Prime Minister expressed his good wishes to the new government and expressed to work with Bangladesh for the benefit of people as close friends.
He also expressed his desire to work closely with Professor Yunus-led Interim government".
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the leadership of the 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate, saying he knew him for a long time. He said Professor Yunus had long experience and his leadership would bring good to the people of Bangladesh".
"The Chief Adviser has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government is committed to safeguarding every citizen of the country including the minorities when the Indian Prime Minister raised the issue of protection of the minorities".
"Professor Muhammad Yunus said that the reports of attacks on the minorities had been exaggerated and he was inviting Indian journalists to visit Bangladesh and report from the ground on the issues of the minority protection"
"Professor Muhammad Yunus said the situation in Bangladesh had been brought under control and life was becoming normal across the country".
