Shoe factory fire takes five lives

Five persons burned to death and two were injured seriously after a fire broke out in a shoe factory in the capital's Swarighat area early Friday.

The fire originated from a rubber factory at 1:00 pm.

Eight firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control around 3:00 pm.

Three of the dead were identified as Aminur Rahman (30), Abdur Rahman (27) and Monir (40). The identities of the two others were yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, the injured were undergoing treatment at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence central office.

One injured person was identified as Md Kabir (32) and another's identity was yet to be known.

Fire service duty officer Dewan Azad told the FE that they had handed over the charred remains of five bodies to Chawkbazar police station.

An official at the police station said the deceased were sleeping when the fire started.

Mr Azad said they would be able to determine the cause of the fire and the financial losses due to it after surveying the incident.
