Six held over lynching at DU campus, JU sues eight over murder

FE DESK | September 21, 2024 00:00:00

Six people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a youth on the Dhaka University campus while the Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have filed a murder case against eight students after the death of Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Molla, a former leader of the university's Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit.

Our DU Correspondent reports: The Dhaka University administration is extremely concerned about the murder at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall last Wednesday night, said a press release on Friday.

Law enforcement, with assistance from the Proctoral Team, has arrested 6 of the 8 accused individuals identified by the investigation committee. The university will promptly take administrative action against these 8 accused persons.

It said, "The university administration has made efforts to quickly take legal measures. Within 24 hours, an investigation committee was formed by the hall administration, and the committee submitted its report at 11 pm on Thursday."

"The Dhaka University administration is working to prevent the recurrence of such a shameful incident and is asking for everyone's cooperation," it added.

Our JU Correspondent reports: Students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) organised a protest rally calling for a ban on all forms of party-affiliated politics among students, teachers, officials, and employees at the university.

This protest was triggered by the recent mob lynching of former BCL leader Shamim Molla, where Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists were reportedly involved in the attack alongside other students.

The protest march commenced from Shahid Minar around 3 pm, moving through main campus roads before assembling in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence.

They presented three key demands to the VC, setting a 48-hour deadline for their fulfillment.

These demands include the discontinuation of all party-affiliated politics among students, teachers, officials, and employees, the prompt organisation of the central student's union (JUCSU) elections, and the prosecution of those linked to and supporting the campus attacks that occurred from July 14-17, both within the university and under state law.

BSS adds: Against the backdrop of two deaths in two separate incidents of mass beatings in Dhaka University (DU) in the city and Jahangirnagar University (JU) in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, the Police Headquarters in a statement on Friday asked all not to take the law into their own hands.

"The incidents of killing people in brutal mass beatings are being witnessed in recent times. Such kind of mob justice is in no way acceptable. So, Bangladesh Police is committed to take tougher legal action against those who would take the law into their own hands," the statement said.

There are provisions in the existing laws of the land to expose those people who commit wrongdoings or crimes to justice, it added.

"No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. If anyone commits crimes, hand him directly over to the law. In no way, anyone can take the law into their own hands," the statement continued.

The Police Headquarters called upon the countrymen to make phone calls over to National Emergency Hotline Service 999 or communicate with nearby police stations if anyone commits crimes and requesting all not to take the law into their own hands.

It has sought cordial cooperation from the countrymen to stop recurrence of the incidents of mob justice or mass beating.

"Bangladesh Police is committed to maintain the country's law and order alongside ensuring safety to the people's lives and properties," the statement ended.
