SK Sinha, 10 others sued for money laundering, loan scam

FE Report | July 11, 2019 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lodged a case against 11 people including former chief justice SK Sinha on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in embezzlement and money laundering.

The accused individuals, through loan fraud, embezzled and laundered Tk 40 million from the Farmers Bank (currently Padma Bank), according to the case statement.

ACC director Syed Iqbal Hossain filed the case with the commission's integrated district office-1 in Dhaka, according the ACC public relations department.

The other accused are - former managing director of the bank AKM Shamim, former senior executive vice-president Gazi Salahuddin, first vice-president Shawpan Kumar Roy, senior vice-presidents Ziauddin Ahmed and Safiuddin Askari, vice-president Md Lutful Haque, Mr Sinha's personal secretary Ranjit Chandra Saha and his wife Shastri Roy, and Tangail residents Mohammad Shahjahan and Niranjan Chandra Saha.

Report from bdnews24.com adds: In October 2018, ACC Chairman revealed the commission found 'evidence' of fraud involving transactions of Tk 40 million borrowed by two so-called businessmen, Shahjahan and Niranjan, from Farmers Bank.

The ACC later launched an investigation over allegations that the fund was deposited in Sinha's bank account, credited as the proceeds of the sale of his house.

Sinha came under fire from the ruling Awami League over the verdict on the 16th amendment to the constitution and left the country on leave in October 2017. Later, he submitted his resignation from overseas.

After his resignation, the Supreme Court said in a rare statement that Sinha had been facing 11 specific charges, including corruption, money laundering, financial irregularities and moral blunder.

Sinha would have retired on January 31, 2018, but he resigned 81 days before the end of his term.

He was the first Bangladeshi chief justice to resign the post.

The government has appealed for a review of the verdict cancelling the 16th constitutional amendment, which allows the MPs to remove any top judge on grounds of incompetency or misconduct.
