The test run of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Pabna is likely soon as its dry run is currently well underway, according to the Russian energy giant ROSATOM.

ROSATOM director general Alexey Likhachev says they remain committed to facilitating the successful completion of the project, with a strong focus on safety, quality and compliance with international standards.

He met the chief adviser at the latter's official Jamuna residence on Wednesday.

The parley mostly focused on the continuing collaboration with Russia in the development of the landmark project aimed at enhancing Bangladesh's energy security through nuclear energy.

Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus says Bangladesh looks forward to expanding cooperation in nuclear energy, focusing on shared interests and advancements in peaceful nuclear technology.

He appreciated ROSATOM's continued support in building the facility and laid emphasis on its timely completion with intent to meet the country's growing energy needs, said a spokesperson for the CA office.

"We're looking forward to your support, which is very important for us," the CA told the ROSATOM top brass.

Mr Likhachev shared the latest update on the nuke project, emphasising that construction work was coming on fine as planned, with multiple milestones having been achieved by far.

"Any choice the people of Bangladesh make is sacred for us," he stated.

Both sides discussed the merit of revising the Intergovernmental Credit Agreement (IGCA) by extending the credit utilisation period until the end of 2026.

In this respect, the two sides agreed to sign Protocol No. 2 to the IGCA shortly while complying with all the necessary formalities.

Both parties also emphasised the importance of continued cooperation in areas such as staff training, safety protocols, and knowledge transfer to ensure the long-term success of the project.

Among others, principal secretary Siraj Uddin Mia, senior secretary of science and technology ministry Md Mokabbir Hossain, and ERD secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky were present during the meeting.

Russian ambassador in Dhaka Alexander Khozin, Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service deputy chairman Alexey Feropontov, ROSATOM's first deputy director general Andrey Petrov, and ASE JSC vice-president and RNPP project director Alexey Deriy accompanied the director general at the meeting.

Mr Likhachev was on a one-day visit here. He last toured Bangladesh in April 2024.
