Uttara jet crash toll hits 35 as two more die

Two more people including a child died on Saturday from burn injuries sustained in the fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in Diabari of Uttara area in the capital.

They succumbed to their injuries within a span of two hours during morning on the day (Saturday).

With the latest fatalities, the death toll from the tragedy rose to 35.

One of these two deceased was a student while the other was an employee at Milestone School and College.

They were undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

The 13-year-old student named Zarif Farhan passed away at the ICU of the burn institute at around 9:00am. He was a seventh grader at Milestone School and College.

His father's name is Habibur Rahman. Zarif used to live with his parents in Uttara and their ancestral home is in Rajbari.

A staff member at Milestone School and College, Masuma Begum (38) succumbed

to her injuries around 10:45 am

on Saturday.

She hailed from Bhola and used to live with her family in Uttara of the capital.

Resident physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Shaon Bin Rahman said that Zarif had sustained 40 per cent burns on his body while Masuma had sustained burns on 90 per cent

of her body.

He said 17 individuals who suffered burn injuries in the plane crash had died so far at the burn institute.

Meanwhile, director of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin told the media at press briefing at the burn institute that 36 patients were now receiving treatment at the burn institute.

He said that among the 36, four patients' conditions were critical.

He said that Milestone School and College's students Rafsi (12) and Ayan Khan (12) were given release from the burn institute following improvement of their health conditions.

He also said that nine patients were being kept under severe category while others were receiving treatment at different wards at the burn institute.

He hoped that they will be able to release more 10 patients from the institute gradually as their conditions were gradually improving.

On July 21, an FT-7 BGI fighter jet of Bangladesh Air Force crashed into Milestone School and College shortly after taking off from the Kurmitola airbase.

Of the 35 individuals who lost their lives in the incident, most were children.
