The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has reduced the price of a 12-kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 28, or 1.89 per cent, to Tk 1,450 from previous Tk 1,478 for March trading by private businesses.
The new rate came into effect on Monday. BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the revised price at a press conference at the commission's Karwan Bazar office in Dhaka on Monday.
The adjustment is based on the Saudi Aramco CP (contract price) for March 2025, fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and changes in value-added tax (VAT).
The CP for propane and butane is set at US$615 and $605 per tonne respectively.
The BERC calculated an average price of $608.50 per tonne by considering a propane and butane mixture at a ratio of 35:65.
The commission has been setting the LPG prices for private operators within the first week of every month since April 2021. The private sector can sell LPG in various cylinder sizes-5.5 kg, 12.5 kg, 15 kg, 16 kg, 18 kg, 20 kg, 22 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg, 35 kg and 45 kg-to consumers at proportionately adjusted prices.
Additionally, the price of LPG, supplied through a reticulated system or centralised storage system, has been reduced to Tk 260.10 per cubic metre from the previous month's Tk 265.40.
The retail price of auto-gas, the LPG used in vehicles, has been revised to Tk 66.43 per litre from Tk 67.74 in February. However, the price of per 12.5-kg cylinder of the state-owned LP Gas remains unchanged at Tk 690.
