The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will honour 140 top VAT payers in recognition of their contribution to the public exchequer.
Of them, nine companies have been selected at the national level while the remaining 131 companies at the district level.
The VAT wing of the NBR picked the VAT payers on the basis of the amount of VAT they paid in fiscal year 2018-19.
The NBR issued a gazette notification on Tuesday, announcing the names of the top VAT payers.
At the national level, the top VAT payers have been categorised under three classifications: manufacturer, business and service.
Top VAT payers selected under the manufacturing sector are Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd. and Fair Electronics Limited.
HamkoCorporation Ltd., Siemens Bangladesh Ltd. and Unimart Ltd. are the three companies selected under the business category.
In the service sector, the highest VAT payers are Summit Communications Ltd, Qatar Airways Group and Chittagong Warehouses Ltd.
Following are the companies selected at the district level:
Dhaka district: Labaid Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Siemens Health Care Ltd., Thai Airways International Public Ltd. Company.
Gazipur: Drug International Ltd., Niloy Motors Ltd., Hatil Complex Ltd.
The highest VAT payers selected from other districts include Esquire Heavy Industries Ltd., Bashundhara Industrial Complex Limited, RFL Electronics Ltd., Akij Steel Mills Ltd., Sapura Silk Mills Ltd., Square Toiletries Ltd, Green Line Transport, Lubnan Trade Consortium Ltd., and Banoful and Co.
The NBR selected the firms on the basis of eligibility criteria of VAT rules, including no dispute over payment of taxes, payment of VAT 10 per cent higher than the previous year, no pending cases or defaulter of bank loans.
The NBR honours the top VAT payers every year as per its 'highest VAT payers' award policy framed in 2005.
Last year, the NBR awarded 144 top VAT payers for their highest VAT payment in FY 2017-18.
