Seventeen coordinators who previously resigned from the anti-discrimination student movement at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have now launched a new platform named 'Sommilito Gono-Ovvutthan RakkhaAndolan' (Combined Mass Uprising Protection Movement).
Students announced establishment of the platform at a press conference held at the Teacher Student-Center (TSC) conference room of the university on Monday afternoon.
The new platform aims at safeguarding and upholding the spirit of the July-August student-mass uprising.
Abdur Rashid Jitu from the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture has been appointed convener while Fahmida Faiza from the Department of Government and Politics will serve as member secretary.
Additionally, Imran Shahriar from the Marketing Department has been appointed the spokesperson and Rudra Mohammad Safiullah from the Department of International Relations will act as co-convener within the committee.
In a written statement delivered at the press conference, Imran Shahriar said, "We have achieved our long sought after second freedom through a bloody struggle. The mass uprising has ignited the dream of a new Bangladesh in the hearts of the entire nation, a place free from fascist power, discrimination, and oppression, where justice, security, and livelihood are assured, and universities are safe for higher education."
Shahriar further said, "At present, we see that the interim government is failing to uphold the spirit of the mass uprising. This crisis stems from both internal and external stakeholders of the government. Allies of fascism are obstructing the government's efforts to promote this spirit."
Abdur Rashid Jitu said, ""We have united to preserve and establish the spirit of the July uprising. We will support the interim government with all our might and at the same time pull its reins."
On October 3, 17 coordinators and co-coordinators at Jahangirnagar University (JU) resigned from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership and direction of the organisation.
