1,842 candidates declared valid

Some 1,842 candidates of 13th parliamentary election have been declared legal while nomination papers of 723 candidates have been rejected by the returning officers.

However, candidates and their rivals can raise question against the decision and ask for review through lodging appeal with the Election Commission (EC).

The candidates can file appeals during the period from today (Monday) to Friday.

According to data released by the EC on Sunday, a total of  3406 application forms seeking nomination were sold, of which 2568 were submitted against 300 constituencies.

Three sets of nomination papers submitted on behalf former premier and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia -- submitted for Feni-1, Bogura-7 and Dinajpur-3 -- were not scrutinised by returning officers.

Nomination paper collection and submission ran between December 12 and 29 followed by their scrutiny by the returning officers between December 30 and January 4.

Of the 10 regions under EC, in Rangpur, out of submissions for 33 parliamentary seats, 219 nomination papers have been declared valid and 59 rejected.

For 39 parliamentary seats in the Rajshahi region, 185 nomination papers have been declared valid and 74 rejected.

In the Khulna region, for 36 parliamentary seats, 196 nomination papers have been declared valid and 79 rejected.

In the Barishal region, for 21 parliamentary seats, 131 nomination papers have been declared valid

and 31 rejected.

In the Mymensingh region, for 38 parliamentary seats, 199 nomination papers have been declared valid and 112 rejected.

In the Dhaka region, for 41 parliamentary seats, 309 nomination papers have been declared valid and 133 rejected.

In the Faridpur region, for 15 parliamentary seats, 96 nomination papers have been declared valid and 46 rejected.

In the Sylhet region, for 19 parliamentary seats, 110 nomination papers have been declared valid and 36 rejected.

In the Cumilla region, for 35 parliamentary seats, 259 nomination papers have been declared valid and 97 rejected.
