40pc electricity from renewable sources by 2041

FE REPORT | June 03, 2021 00:00:00

Around 40 per cent of the country's overall electricity generation will come from renewable energy sources by 2041, according to the Power System Master Plant.

An estimated 2.0-million people have already got access to electricity through 5.8-million solar home systems across the country.

State minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid disclosed the plan while addressing a webinar styled 'Bangladesh-UK Climate Partnership' on Wednesday.

He said Bangladesh has the potential to install grid-connected solar power plants but land scarcity is the key obstacle.

Innovation of necessary technology is required to boost mega solar power plant installation on a small area of land, Mr Hamid opined.

The country is willing to work jointly with developed countries to innovate such technology, he stated.

COP26 president Alok Sharma, foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, environment, forests and climate change minister Md Shahab Uddin, thematic ambassador of Climate Vulnerable Forum Saima Wazed, among others, attended the virtual meeting.
