At least 4,439 people were killed in 3,103 road accidents across the country last year, said a report on Tuesday.
Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA), a voluntary organisation campaigning for road safety, prepared the report. Nearly 7,499 others were injured in those accidents.
A total of 1,672 accidents took place involving buses and trucks while 674 others involving motorbikes, it added.
The report also said most of the people were killed during the Eid vacations in June and August and in January for foggy weather.
Dhaka, Bogura and Chattogram were the most vulnerable districts in terms of the death tolls.
A total of 346 people were killed in Dhaka, 263 in Bogura and 199 in Chattogram in road accidents last year. At least 160 motorcyclists were killed and 128 of them died on the spot.
NISCHA chairman and actor Ilias Kanchan said most of the incidents took place due to carelessness and whimsical attitude of the drivers of heavy vehicles including buses and trucks.
He said lack of monitoring, increase in the number of small vehicles, competition among drivers and lack of awareness among pedestrians are the causes of the accidents. Earlier, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (passengers' welfare association) put the death toll on roads at 7,221 in 5,514 accidents.
Its latest report, published on January 25, said 15,466 others were injured in the road crashes across the country last year.
On an average, 20 people were killed every day last year, the report said.
