Around 500 bhoris (over 5.8 kg) of gold ornaments were reportedly stolen from a jewellery shop inside Fortune Shopping Mall in the capital's Mouchak area early Thursday.
Police and local sources said the theft occurred at Shompa Jewellers around 3:00am. CCTV footage shows two burglars, disguised in burqas, cutting the shutter lock and carrying away a large amount of gold.
"Around 400 bhoris of gold jewellery were on display and another 100 bhoris were kept as mortgaged, along with about Tk 40,000 in cash. The gang took everything," shop owner Achinta Kumar Biswas said.
"I closed the store at 9:00pm on Wednesday and went home. The next morning, the market's security guard informed me about the incident, and I found my shop completely empty," he added.
Golam Faruk, officer-in-charge of Ramna Model Police Station, said a complaint has been filed and investigators are examining CCTV footage to trace the thieves.
The incident follows a similar burglary on October 5 in Jatrabari, where criminals stole nearly 125 bhoris of gold jewellery and about Tk 275,000 in cash by cutting through a wall.
A case was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on Tuesday, and police are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting drives to identify the suspects.
