9,754 died, 15,096 injured in 7,369 accidents

A total of 9,754 individuals died while 15,096 were injured in 7,369 roads, railways and river routes accidents in 2025. Of them, 9,111 people died and 14,812 were injured in 6,729 road accidents.

The yearly financial loss caused by all these accidents is more than Tk 600 billion (60,000 crore).

Motorbikes accounted for 2,493 incidents or 37.04 per cent of the total road accidents. A total of 2,983 persons died and 2,219 were injured due to the motorbike incidents.

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (JKS) Mozammel Haque Chowdhury revealed the figures at a press briefing at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Sunday. JKS prepared and revealed the findings based on reports published in media.

As per JKS data, the number of road accidents increased 6.94 per cent in 2025 compared to 2024, while deaths increased 5.79 per cent, and injuries 14.87 per cent.

A total of 513 railways incidents took 485 lives and left 145 injured; while 127 river routes incidents claimed 158 lives, injured 139 and 38 remained missing.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury urged all the political parties vying in the upcoming national election to include steps to reduce accident casualties in their manifestos.

JKS had the identities of 1,288 vehicles among the total vehicles involved with the accidents. Of them, 14.49 per cent were buses; while 22.60 per cent were trucks, pickups, covered vans and lorries; 5.85 per cent car, jeep and microbuses; 6.63 per cent CNG-run auto-rickshaws; 28.48 per cent motorbikes; 13.54 per cent battery-run auto-rickshaws and easy-bikes; and 8.38 per cent Nasimon, Karimon, Mahindra tractor and Leguna.

He claimed that accidents involving motor bikes and battery-run auto-rickshaws increased alarmingly.
