Abed Ali couldn't come back home

One Abed Ali finally died on Sunday despite securing an acquittal order from the court after 12 years of his legal battle in a police murder case.

He was sentenced to death by a lower court in 2006 in a case relating to the murder of two constables, according to Jamuna TV, a private channel.

In December 2011, a High Court (HC) bench scrapped the lower court's order and asked the jail authorities to set him free.

Four years after the order, the government filed an appeal against the HC order.

After long hearing on the case, the appellate division of the Supreme Court upheld Mr Ali's acquittal order, the TV station reported.

But the release order did not even reach the jail authorities in six months.

With the help of human rights activists, the relatives of Mr Ali finally managed to get the release order last Sunday.

But his family received a phone call regarding his death while they were on the way to the prison cell of Khulna Medical Collage Hospital to bring him back home.

Mr Ali had been suffering from colon cancer.
