FE Report | April 11, 2018 00:00:00

The national anti-graft watchdog nabbed on Tuesday four persons including former audit committee chief of troubled Farmers Bank in a case filed over their alleged involvement in loan scam.

The detainees include the bank's former audit committee chairman Mahabubul Haque Chisty (alias Babul Chisty), his son Rashedul Haque Chisty, Farmers Bank's first vice-president Muhammad Masudur Rahman Khan and senior vice-president Zia Uddin Ahmed.

The four persons were arrested on the grounds of a case from the city's Segunbagicha, near the head office of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), at around 2:30pm by a police team led by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) director Kazi Shafiqul Alam, said ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

Earlier, ACC deputy director Md Shamsul Alam had filed the case with Gulshan Police Station against six persons including the detained four for their connection in suspicious transaction of Tk 1.60 billion from the bank.

The two other accused are -- Babul Chisty's wife Rozi Chisty and Farmers Bank's senior executive vice-president and former manager of the bank's Gulshan corporate branch Delwar Hossain.

After the arrest, the four persons were taken to the ACC headquarters where Babul Chisty told reporters that "There were allegations against us and we came here as the commission summoned us, let's see what happens next in the investigation."

According to the case statement, violating rules and regulations of Farmers Bank, Babul Chisty, in collusion with some bank officials, opened savings account in the bank's Gulshan branch for depositing and withdrawing a large amount of money in cash and pay orders.

In its investigation, ACC found that Mr Chisty opened around 25 accounts in different branches of the bank using the names of his wife, son, daughter and his company and carried out suspicious transactions of Tk 1,599,549,642 through cash and pay-orders.

Mr Chisty received funds in his accounts from those of the bank's clients through transfer, handover and layering. He also paid the prices of shares of Farmers Bank purchased on his and family members names with the money he received.

It was proved in the commission investigation that Babul committed punishable offence by violating section-4 of the 'Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012' through suspicious transactions, the case statement noted.
