Good governance in banking

ACC chief sees turnaround

FE Report | January 24, 2018 00:00:00

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman Iqbal Mahmood said on Tuesday the country's banking sector started seeing good governance to some extent from 2017.

"The information that we have indicates that good governance has begun in the banking sector in the year 2017," he told journalists when asked about the recent remarks about the banking sector by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

"I have no comment about CPD's remark," he said, however.

Mr Mahmood was addressing at a function marking signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) among ACC and three other organisations -- Gunijan Trust, Kite Bangladesh and CLP-USA, a platform of Bangladeshis in the USA -- at the ACC headquarters.

Talking about the current state of the banking sector, he said that a portion of the embezzled money was deposited in accounts of BASIC Bank while some of the loans were rescheduled.

Besides, the information gathered by the commission suggested that the boards of directors of some banks were working well, he added.

Mentioning the commission's cases related to the banking sector filed before 2017, the ACC chief also said that everyone in the banking sector has become very cautious, for which the loan frauds have declined.

Responding to another question, he said the ACC already launched investigation into the graft allegations against two officials of the education ministry.

The law enforcers arrested Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid's personal officer Motaleb Hossain, an employee of the ministry Nasir Uddin and Lakehead Grammar School owner Khaled Hasan Matin for their alleged involvement in bribery.

Kite Bangladesh chief executive officer (CEO) ATM Kamruzzaman signed the MoU on behalf of the three organisations with ACC director general (prevention) Md Jafar Iqbal to promote good practices in the organisations for three years.

Gunijan Trust chairman Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, ACC commissioners Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed and AFM Aminul Islam, Kite Bangladesh chairman Dr Ananya Raihan, and CLP-USA president Mohammad Faruk also spoke at the programme.
