Adani requests govt to clear $500m dues

FE REPORT | September 20, 2025 00:00:00

Expressing concern over the delay in clearing outstanding payments, India's Adani Power Limited (APL) has requested the Bangladesh government to settle dues of around $500 million, sources say.

APL Managing Director Anil Sardana recently made the request in a letter to the finance secretary.

He requested the finance secretary to facilitate the immediate clearance of all dues, especially as per the reconciliation statement, including late payment surcharge (LPS) to the extent admitted by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).

Mr Anil said BPDB, at a meeting on June 23 this year, assured the clearance of all dues, including LPS, within September 30.

However, no payment schedule had yet been provided, he said.

He said Adani only received a $62.44 million payment advice on September 14, for which swift intimation was awaited from Bangladesh Krishi Bank.

But even after that payment, dues of around $500 million would remain, he said.

Mr Anil said the delay in clearing the dues was a concern, raising questions about BPDB's payment timelines and commitment to full settlement.

He said the unpredictability in cash flow was directly impacting the Godda power plant's smooth functioning.

Besides, timely and consistent payments in line with BPDB's earlier assurances were critical for ensuring financial stability and operational continuity.

Mr Anil expressed gratitude to BPDB for releasing substantial payments from June to August this year, saying this significantly helped reduce the overdue payments.

The central bank has already authorised Bangladesh Krishi Bank to make payments to APL.

A BPDB official said, "We are trying to make payments to Adani regularly."

He said BPDB had paid the company $437 million in June, settling arrears for power supplied until March 31.

The official said Adani had earlier claimed around $900 million in unpaid power bills, including interest.

But BPDB estimated it at around $700 million, he said.

Under a 2015 deal, APL has been supplying 1,496MW power to BPDB from the Godda plant in pursuit of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) since the commencement of supply in April 2023.

The plant has emerged as a major source of electricity in northern Bangladesh.

In the letter, Mr Anil said the company was supplying uninterrupted power to BPDB and requesting the latter to clear the overdue payments under the PPA.

Apart from the huge dues, BPDB is managing payments against monthly bills of around $90-100 million for regular power supply.

The BPDB official said Adani's regular monthly bill was about $80-100 million.
