ADB bankrolls 'good' projects

BD nets $25b in loans so far: Kamal

FE REPORT | October 14, 2019 00:00:00

Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said on Sunday the Asian Development Bank has never declined to finance whenever Bangladesh approached it with a "good" project.

He said so far, the Manila-based lender has provided $25 billion in loans to assist Bangladesh's journey towards development.

"Based on our relationship I can say there is no constraints in funding (from the ADB) if we have a good project," the minister told reporters after a meeting with the board of directors of the bank in Dhaka.

The team led by executive director of the ADB board In-chang Song is visiting Bangladesh to review the progress Bangladesh has made with its funding. The team will inspect the ongoing ADB-funded projects across the country.

"The team has come to see what we have achieved so far, because they have been with us since 1973," said Mr Kamal.

He said the ADB team is in town to see firsthand how Bangladesh is utilising its funds and the further requirement "for reaching our final destination."

Mr Kamal said the ADB delegation will also visit the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar. "We have requested the bank to raise its voice for the Rohynga repatriation," he said.

The minister told the team members how the Rohingya people are creating problems for Bangladesh.

He said the density of population in Bangladesh is among the highest in the world.

With Bangladesh's big population, an additional 1.0 million Rohingya people is "a huge burden" on the government to take care, he said.

Mr Song of the ADB said Bangladesh achieved highest economic growth last year in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We're proud that we are a long-time development partner to the Bangladesh government," he said.

"We hope to continue our partnership with Bangladesh in its journey towards prosperity and the economic development in future," said Mr Song.
