Well-wishers, friends and fellows extolled late Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley for his outstanding contributions to different fields like education, political science, social development and literature.
According to them, the demise of Mr Shelley, who was well-known for versatile role as a civil servant, writer, educationist and journalist, is an irreparable loss for the nation.
They made the remarks at a remembrance meeting organised by Academic Press and Publishers Library (APPL) in association with the Dr. Mizanur Rahman Shelley Smriti Parishad at the national press club.
Dhaka University (DU) Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury attended the meeting as the chief guest.
A good number of dignitaries took part in the commemorative discussion including National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Former Advisor to the Bangladesh Government Zakaria Chowdhury, writer and editor of now-defunct Sachittro Swdes Zakiuddin Ahmed, politician Mozaffar Hossain Paltu and Former Foreign State Minister Abul Hasan Chowdhury.
Former Vice-chancellor of Eastern University Professor Dr Rahim B Talukdar presided over the meeting.
The Editor of the Financial Express Shah Husain Imam and the APPL Managing Director Ahmed Sarwerruddawla also attended the memorial meeting among others.
Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury said Mr Shelley was an ambidextrous person who excelled in the fields like teaching, writing, civil service and journalism.
"Our Shelley could express his introspective thoughts in both verbal and written format in a catchy way," said Mr Choudhury, adding that such quality is rare among many scholars.
A noted scholar Mr Shelley, helped the society to know about the state mechanism through his profound thought, the Professor Emeritus said, adding that the late scholar dedicated himself to gather knowledge for improving the state.
In his speech, Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury said he had a bosom friendship with Mr Shelley since their enrolment at class seven in St. Gregory's High School in 1953.
"Shelley was an astounding social worker from his early life to professional career," said Mr Choudhury.
Terming the late fellow a 'polymath', the National Professor said Mr Shelly had always been at the centre stage of any gathering by virtue of his amicable personality.
A polymath is a person whose knowledge spans a significant number of diversified subjects.
Mr Mizanur Rahman died of brain haemorrhage on August 12 at the age of 76.
He started his career as a teacher of Dhaka University after completing study from the Department of Political Science there.
In 1967 he resigned from the teaching profession before joining the Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP).
Dr Shelley also served as a technocrat minister in the cabinet of H M Ershad in 1990.
