All RMG units pay wages to workers: BGMEA

FE Report | August 21, 2018 00:00:00

Almost all the garment factories have paid wages for the month of July and festival allowances to their workers, BGMEA claimed on Monday.

Most of the factories have also made partial payment of 10 to 15 days for the month of August.

Moinuddin Ahmed, first vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said this at a press conference held at its headquarters in the city.

"We have been closely monitoring some 700 garment factories identified by different agencies as vulnerable to labour unrest over wage payment," he told the press conference.

The BGMEA formed 15 monitoring committees and they closely monitored the vulnerable factories for one month, he said.

The trade body lobbied the banks to obtain emergency funds for 21 factories which were identified as most vulnerable over payment of wages and festival allowances to the workers.

"Not a single factory is left where payment of wages and allowance issues were not solved," the BGMEA leader said.

He said some factories had been facing problems over demands including advance partial payment for the month of August and leave ahead of Eid.

There was no legal obligation over advance payment and holidays, he explained.

Problems were found with compliant factories where trade unions exist, but wages and other allowances were paid, he said.

Mr Ahmed said 90 per cent of the factories were closed by Sunday and the rest announced Eid holidays on Monday.

He requested the government to step up vigilance so that vehicles cannot carry passengers beyond their capacity.

The factory owners also announced holidays in phases so that workers don't face any transport crisis, Mohammed Nasir, another vice president of BGMEA, said.

Responding to a question over non-payment of festival allowance by a garment factory namely Crescent Attire, Mr Nasir said the unit is not a member of BGMEA.

There were some incidents of unrest where garment workers took to the streets demanding payment of their wages and other allowances timely ahead of Eid.

However, the issue of Gazipur incident was resolved through negotiations by the industrial police with the owners.
