The council of advisers approved a proposal on Thursday to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to stop harassment and enforced disappearances by law enforcers.
It was approved at a meeting presided over by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Once enacted, the new provision will require that anyone arrested must be allowed to contact their family, friends, or lawyer within a maximum of 12 hours of being taken to the police station, said Law Adviser Asif Nazrul while briefing the press on the decisions of the meeting.
