The government has imposed a 22-day ban on catching, sale, marketing, preservation and transportation of Hilsha fish.
The ban will come into effect from tomorrow (Wednesday), and will continue until November 4, considering the vital breeding season of Hilsha fish.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister S M Rezaul Karim revealed it in a press conference at the ministry on Monday.
He said the government has imposed the 22-day ban to ensure proper breeding of Hilsha and also to save mother Hilsha.
"None will be allowed to catch Hilsha during the period."
He also said they will not allow any fish-catching boat in the rivers that are considered potential breeding grounds of mother Hilsha. A total of 152 upazilas in 36 districts will come under the ban.
River police and coast guard will be patrolling to stop prevent catching Hilsha.
Mr Karim said apart from patrolling by the law-enforcing agencies, the government will also ensure constant monitoring, supported by modern technology.
If any motorised fishing vessel entered into Bangladesh waters, the government will seize it by following legal procedures.
However, the government will provide foods to the fishermen and other people concerned, who cannot catch Hilsha during the ban.
The minister opined that a huge production of Hilsha fish has been possible this year due to various initiatives, taken by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the department concerned.
Replying to a question, he said at present the government is not considering Hilsha export.
He expressed optimism that one day the country will be able to export Hilsha following its surplus production.
Fisheries Secretary Rawnak Mahmud and high officials of the ministry and the department concerned were present, among others, in the briefing.
