FE REPORT | February 25, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh is a candidate in elections for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council and two other global bodies, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said Monday and sought support of the member-states.

The head of post-uprising government expressed the aspiration during his meeting with Abdelouahab Saidani, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka.

Election to the non-permanent seats of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2031-2032 is scheduled for 2030 in New York.

"The Chief Adviser sought Algeria's support in the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and the UN Security Council as Bangladesh is a candidate in elections in all these three international organisations," said a spokesperson for the CA Office.

Elections for the Council of the International Maritime Organization under Category C, for the term 2026-2027, are scheduled for December 2025 in London.

Election of membership for the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2028-2030 will be held in 2027 in New York.

The Algerian envoy reaffirmed its full support to Bangladesh's Interim Government and invited Chief Adviser Professor Yunus to visit the North African country.

The Chief Adviser also invited his Algerian counterpart to visit Bangladesh and requested the country to send their business delegations to Dhaka in an effort to deepen trade and investment ties.

During the meeting, the ambassador said his country would continue political and economic support to Bangladesh and their Energy Minister will visit Dhaka in March.

He said that Algeria was planning to import more Bangladeshi products such as textiles, jute, pharmaceuticals, food, and electronics.

Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary and chief coordinator of SDG affairs, and B M Jamal Hossain, Director-General at the Foreign Ministry, were present during the meeting.
