The oil and gas exploration company BAPEX has taken an initiative to develop 108 wells for increasing supply of natural gas to ensure energy security and production, reports BSS.

"Of the wells, the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) would search 53 wells, dig 35 development wells and complete work on 20 wells to materialise the vision-2021," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told the parliament on Thursday.

Replying to a starred question, he said the gas supply was increased to 1,010 mmcfd during the present government's tenure to accelerate economic growth and improve lifestyle.

Nasrul said a total of 1,000 mmcfd liquefied natural gas (LNG) would be added to the national grid in April and October to meet the country's growing energy need.

He said the state-run Petrobangla signed agreements with Excelerate Energy Bangladesh Limited (EEBL) and Summit LNG Terminal Co. (Pvt.) Ltd for LNG to increase energy production side by side with meeting the growing demand.

He further told the parliament about 47 power plants would add 13,771 megawatt (MW) electricity to the national grid during 2018 to 2024.
