SC marks 50 yrs of Constitution

Basic spirit of 72-Constitution was hacked thru illegal amendments: Speaker

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Friday said the basic spirit and philosophy of the 1972-Constitution were hacked through its illegal amendments.

Later, through the 15th amendment, much of the spirit of the 1972-Constitution has been restored, the Speaker viewed.

In the progress of overall development and prosperity of the country, the three organs of the state should work to ensure the rule of law, equality, justice and the welfare of the people through mutual cooperation from their own jurisdiction as described in the Constitution, she said while speaking as the chief guest at a programme held marking the golden jubilee of adopting the country's Constitution.

Supreme Court administration on Friday organised the programme at the Supreme Court Judges' Sports Complex.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was in the chair while Law Minister Anisul Huq was present as special guest.

Appellate Division judges, Justice Md Nuruzzaman, Justice Obaidul Hassan, Justice Borhanuddin and Justice M Enayetur Rahim; Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Momtazuddin Fakir, among others, spoke at the event.

Former Chief Justices ABM Khairul Haque, Md Muzammel Hossain, Syed Mahmud Hossain, High Court Division judges, senior lawyers Dr Kamal Hossain, M Amir Ul Islam and other SC lawyers and officials were also present.

The Speaker also said, "This constitution will be fruitful only when the people of Bangladesh are freed from hunger, poverty, deprivation and discrimination and get a better life. Bangladesh is now a role model of development in the world. By continuing this trend of development, collective efforts have to be continued to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh."

The Chief Justice said, "The people have been disempowered by repeatedly perverting the Constitution through various undemocratic interventions. However, the people did not give the least support to those controversial changes."

The organisers in the programme honored all the members of the Constitution Drafting Committee of 1972. Three members of the committee including Dr Kamal Hossain received the Commemoration in person while family members of the other members represented them.
