BD seeks Vietnam’s support to be Asean’s dialogue partner

Two countries sign three MoUs

Bangladesh sought Vietnam's support in favour of the country's desire to become Sectoral Dialogue Partner of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), reports UNB.

Bangladesh reiterated its keen interest to intensify political, trade, and economic relations with Asean countries, according to a joint statement issued on Monday

The country also urged Vietnam to support Bangladesh to join the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC).

Vietnam agreed to give due consideration to the requests on the basis of consultation with Asean and MGC member countries, according to the joint statement issued.

The two sides expressed satisfaction at the growing volume of bilateral trade which in 2017 amounted to nearly US$ 900 million, an increase of around 50 percent against that of 2016.

The two sides also agreed to hold the 2nd meeting of the Joint Committee on Trade in 2018 to seek avenues to enhance bilateral trade.

To promote bilateral investment, the two sides stressed the need to effectively implement the Agreement on the Promotion and Protection of Investment and agreed create the best conditions for entrepreneurs and business communities of the two countries to explore business and investment opportunities in both countries.

Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation and share experiences and know-how in developing sustainable agriculture and aquaculture.

They stressed the need for implementation of the Air Service Agreement to establish direct air connectivity between the two countries to foster trade, tourism, and people-to-people contact.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought Vietnam's support for a peaceful solution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

President Tran Dai Quang expressed his support for a viable and long-term solution to the problem for the sake of peace, stability and development in the region.

Both sides agreed to continue their support for the observations of the Declaration on the conduct of parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and look forward to the conclusion of a substantive Code of Conduct (COC).

President Dai Quang invited both the President, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to visit Vietnam at a mutually convenient time; date of which to be decided through the diplomatic channel.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and Vietnam have signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to promote bilateral cooperation in the areas of fisheries and livestock, industries and cultural exchange.

The MoUs were signed after talks between the two sides.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the Bangladesh delegation at the talks while visiting Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang his country side.
