BD sees 105 dengue deaths in 2021

The country recorded 105 deaths from dengue fever in 2021, while a total of 28,429 people were also hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease in the year.

The outbreak of the communicable disease had taken a serious turn since July that exacerbated in the following months, as per the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data.

The highest 34 deaths were reported in August, followed by 23 in September, 22 in October, and 12 in July.

The concluding two months - November and December - logged seven deaths each.

The highest 7,841 dengue-positive patients were hospitalised in September, followed by 7,698 in August, 5,458 in October, and 3,567 in November.

On the other hand, 28,265 people were released from hospitals after treatment last year.

According to a statement - issued by the DGHS, four people were hospitalised in the past 24 hours until Friday morning.

Currently, 59 people are admitted to public and private sector hospitals across the country, of whom 31 are in Dhaka city and 28 in other parts of the country.

The dengue outbreak amid the Covid-19 pandemic caused serious trouble at some points last year, as many patients were found simultaneously infected with both the viruses.

In 2020, a total of 1,405 patients were hospitalised with the viral fever. The country recorded the highest 156 deaths and 1,01,354 positive cases in 2019.

Bangladesh had begun to keep the record of hospitalised dengue patients since 2000, when 93 people died and 5,551 were infected.
