Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished on Thursday a total of 173 structures built illegally on the banks of the River Turag at Mirpur in the capital.

The demolished structures include two three-storey, seven two-storey, and 23 one-storey buildings, 38 semi-pucca structures and 103 tin-roofed houses which were illegally built at Jahurabad, Palpara, and Kawindia areas under Mirpur police station.

During the drive, the authority also recovered one acre of land.

Earlier on Wednesday, BIWTA bulldozed one three-storey building, 11 two-storey buildings, 23 one-storey buildings, 38 semi-pucca buildings and 112 tin-shed shops from Jahurabad to Palpara.

The eviction drive will also be carried out at Jahurabad, Palpara and Kawindia areas on March 25, 27 and 28.

BIWTA has launched the drive to reclaim the river's land lying under illegal occupation of grabbers.

It has also taken a Tk 8.48-billion project to build 19 jetties in different areas including Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Kanchpur, Tanbazar, Machuwabazar and Khanpur.

It will construct a 50-kilometre walkway, plant saplings along the path and set up three eco-parks at Shinnirtek, Tongi and Ashulia under the project.
