BIWTA knocks down illegal structures at Keraniganj

FE REPORT | August 21, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished several structures, built illegally on the bank of the river Buriganga at Keraniganj in Dhaka. A total of one and half acres of land were also recovered during the drive on Wednesday.

A BIWTA official told the FE that they carried out the drive in Kautail area under Konda union, and demolished several illegal structures, including one dockyard, 200 feet boundary walls, and a bungalow - owned by former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid.

Mostafizur Rahman, Joint Director of BIWTA Dhaka River Port (Sadarghat Launch Terminal), said the government has already earmarked the boundaries of the rivers Buriganga, Shitalakshya, Turag and Balu. The boundary pillars have been set up around 80 kilometres areas of those rivers surrounding the capital.

He also said they carried out the eviction drive as per the directive of the higher authority to ensure natural flow of the river Buriganga. None would be spared, no matter how influential they are, if found involved in grabbing river and building structures on the bank.
