BJKS’ 18-pt recommendation for safe waterway journey during Eid

FE Report | May 23, 2019 00:00:00

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) has placed an 18-point recommendation for the country's water transport sector to ensure safe and hassle-free journey during Eid.

The rights body in the recommendations stressed checking overload in vessels, stopping realisation of extra fair and lessening pressure at the ferry terminals.

The passengers' platform placed the recommendations on Wednesday through a media statement signed by BJS secretary general Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury.

Every year the water transport operators force people to pay extra, apart from overloading their vessels, Mr Chowdhury said in the statement, alleging that they (vessel operators) do not follow the government-set fares during Eid.

Citing media reports, the rights body said transport insiders hand over cabin tickets to black market to make extra money illegally.

The 18-point recommendations also include-taking measures to curb different fraud syndicates, stopping operation of unfit vessels- especially in the coastal areas- not allowing passenger carrying speedboats on different routes, deploying sufficient number of law enforces, including Coast Gourd, RAB, and tightening security by conducting mobile courts across the waterways.
